The African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS) is organizing, in partnership with the West and Central Africa Network of Agricultural and Rural Advisory Services (RESCAR-AOC), the National Agency for Rural Development (ANADER) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cote d’Ivoire, the 4th Africa-Wide Agricultural Extension Week back to back with the 5th International Fair of Agriculture and Animal Resources of Abidjan. The 4th Extension Week is under the theme “Private Sector and Agricultural Advisory Services: What Synergies for Sustainable Agricultural Development in Africa”. It will be held from 20th to 24th November 2019 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
The context of the 4th AEW is characterized by growing efforts at national, regional and international levels to make agriculture in Africa more productive, profitable and sustainable. The AFAAS Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week (AEW) is an international event that brings together averagely 600 participants (extension and advisory services practitioners, farmers, researchers, institutions of higher learning, policy makers and development partners) from across Africa and the World to take stock on a strategic theme for a better contribution of agricultural extension and advisory to sustainable development in Africa. Its purpose is to facilitate processes for improving the use of knowledge, technologies and innovations by agricultural value chain actors to achieve their individual and national development goals. Beyond thematic debates, the AFAAS AEW is a unique venue for sharing experiences and learning between professionals from different backgrounds, strengthening interactions with policy makers and investors and developing fruitful partnerships. The AFAAS AEW is also meant to discuss new developments, emerging needs in capacity development and defining new directions in agricultural extension and advisory services for the coming years. It is held biennially.
AFAAS held its first Africa Wide Agricultural Extension Week in Gaborone Botswana in August 2013, which brought together over 300 delegates from within and outside Africa. The second Extension Week held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in October 2015, was attended by 400 delegates from within and outside the continent. The 3rd edition was held in Durban South Africa from 30th October to 3rd November 2017 with more than 500 participants.
AFAAS is a Continental body that brings National Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services (AEAS) under one umbrella. The AFAAS’ goal is to enhance utilization of improved knowledge, technologies and innovations by agricultural value chain actors for improving productivity oriented towards their individual and national development objectives. AEAS is a key component of the innovation system, playing a pivotal role in promoting productivity, increasing food security, strengthening rural communities, and underpinning agriculture as the engine for pro-poor economic growth.
